Moving Checklist


□ Start looking for a Removal company and book it. Determine your budget, and ask for a quotation.

□ Determine what is unnecessary and then throw away everything that you do not need.

□ It is now time to read your machines’ manual and look for instructions on how to move your washing machine, fridge, and dryer.

□ Consume kitchen goods according to expiry dates. Use up all that are already open

□ Start consuming foods that are on the fridge.

□ Start sorting things outside of the house. Start from the garage, your shed, under the house.

□ Canisters with flammable gas should be disposed. Chemicals for the garden, spary paints, cleaning fluids, aerosols, camping gas, and all kinds. Used up liquids are not particularly safe when your moving, specially on a far move.

□ Gather your documents and put it in a filing folder. If you can, scan it and make digital file as back up.

□ Get you mails, redirected to your new address.

□ Look for a school, primary school or day care. Arrange your child school transfer.

□ Cancel any subscription by mail, or change address to redirect them to your new home.

□ Are you moving out of the country? Then process your passport, visa for the country your moving into, get some considerable amount of currency with foreign exchange or local bank, organise credit cards and your accomodation.

□ Return back rented items, books or DVDs etc.

□ Arrange rubbish pick up from council. You’ll be surprised how much garbage you have.

□ Contact your Real Estate Agents, ask when will the key be collected and date of settlement. This will determine your move day or earlier.

□ Plan how to pack up your legal documents, and very personal belongings such as jewelry.

□ Check any damage that needs to be repaired and arrange for it to get fixed.

□ Start looking for a convenient storage facility nearest to your moving address if necessary.

□ Start gathering medical records for you family, and pets. Include dental records and school records for your children.

□ Arrange, property inspection and cleaners if your renting.

□ Review your insurance, car and home/contents.

□ Start organising a Home and Content insurance for your new home.

□ Call and notify Electoral Office of your new address. Change your address for Drivers Licence and Car Registration.

□ Have a run through of the floor plan of your new home.Plan where the furniture will beplacement. Measure the dimensions to make sure your furniture will fit. Measure the door, see if large items will fit through.

□ Make a list of everything you own. Check general condition as you list them, note about any scratches or dents.

□ Make special arrangement for precious items that needs special care to move.


□ Buy boxes, packing materials, labels, bubble wraps, tapes, markers, papers. Mostly are available at Bunnings.

□ Don’t use newspaper for packing. It soils the items. Sometimes it leaves black marks on your belongins. use, clean white packing papers.

□ Clearly lable every box, on the tape, include the contents and room of destination for easy unpacking.

□ Make a list of all your cartons and boxes with contents. number them. If you hired a moving comapany, take a picture or video of each carton to claim any damage later.

□ When paking, pack lighert items on larger boxes. Heavier valuables be packed on smaller boxes. Make sure heavier items go down the bottom and mark your box “TOP” to avoid placing it upside down.

□ Disassemble furniture that comes apart. Take a picture of screws as you take them apart or tape screws in ther location. Try to put all of the following items on the same box, your TV, sound system remote controls, bed legs, shelf supports, keys to furniture cabinets and manufacturers instructions for reassembly of items.

□ Prepare ESSENTIALS (at your reach easy access) with kettle, tea and coffee, breakfast requirements, special childrens toys, school needs, pet requirements (especially leads), bathroom necessities, telephone handset, medications, snacks, corkscrew, spare light globes, scissors, tools, toilet paper. This will save you tons of time looking over through all boxes. Try to pack two days worth of clothes in it as well.

□ Consider asking your friends or family to attend to your children and pets on the day of your move.

□ Start transferring your accounts like bank, internet, telephone, gas, electricity connections, and other utilities.

□ Complete any prescriptions you need the 7 days prior and after the move. Collect any dry cleaning.

□ Send your car for service, book a mower for your yard for the following week.

□ Request for last readings of meters such as gas and electricity.

□ Discontinue auto debit payment plans, local memberships, delivery services, newspapers.

□ File for time off work on the day of move.

□ Inspect new home to be cleaned thoroughly, oven and carpet steam-cleaned before your move. Book cleaners for original home after your move.

□ Collapse outdoor items, children’s play equipment. Consider selling them or donating.

□ Prepare toolbox easy to access such as hammer, allen keys, screwdrivers, lightbulbs, wall hooks, cutter or knife etc. Label it your TOOLBOX. It will come handy when its time to unpack.


□ Prepare a set of bed linens, toiletries, and towels for the first night. You don’t want to open each box looking for these items when you’re all tired and just want to get to sleep.

□ Talk to your removal company and show them your plan. Which furniture goes to where. With the drawing plan you arranged earlier.

□ Lightly water your indoor plants and pack them in plastic lined boxes.

□ Advise your booked services, gardener, babysitter, cleaners, etc.

□ It’s not unusual to lose your things during the move. Make a back up computer hard disk. Prepare scanner and printer for your travel.

□ Call and remind all details of move with Removal company, Lawyer, Real Estate Agent both the old home and the new. Confirm that your moving company has clear detailed instructions. Ask and inform all needed contact numbers and old and new addresses.

□ Prepare parking and clear up access of the Removal truck.


□ Empty your fridge and defrost. If there are still left over frozen items, have a portable cooler and ice. Clean your oven. Ready your vacuum on hand for last minute cleaning.

□ Pack up your personal luggage and make sure you take with you.

□ If using professional packers remember to leave out essential items for that evening and the following day.

□ Pack up and unplug appliance cords, store it with cable ties.

□ Withdraw Cash on hand for immediate expenses and necessary payments for moving organised.

□ Contact old neighbours and say goodbye. Advice them if your house will be unoccupied for sometime.

□ Final prep for tomorrows move. Take photos of all furniture condition and boxes.


□ Get the “ESSENTIALS” and “TOOLS” boxes ready on hand.

□ Give details to the Removalist with your floor plans and the new house parking information.

□ Ask movers to load kitchen boxes last. This means it will also be unloaded first.

□ If you will have visitors, minimise them. Have all children and pet needs at hand.

□ Make sure all meters are read, house key collection organised.

□ Counter-check all items with your checklist as they go into the moving van.

□ Lock all doors and windows. Turn off water heater, electric power system if required. Shut off gas and water taps.

□ Make a round and visually double check the tops of cupboards, garden area, sheds, garage for any things that can be left.

□ Return all keys to the Real Estate Agent .

□ Uninstall program of remote garage opener from your car.

□ Last minute walk around, for anything that needs cleaning. Document all around appearance of the house for future claims. Take photos.


□ Supervise Movers’ entry point and give clear directions as to furniture placement. Your printed plan will be handy.

□ If leasing, document condition of property and furnishings with the appropriate agent. With COVID-19 protocols, this maybe just by photos. Take photo’s of your concern and send it through email. Check cracks, corner damages, faucets, glass cracks, floor damage, water marks etc. Anything that you would think you would pay for the repair.

□ Open, faucet and switch on light to check utilites are already connected including hot water and broadband.

□ When unloading is done, inspect all boxes and furniture is in good apparent condition. This is where your before loading photos are useful.

□ Check security and locks changed if earlier asked to be changed by locksmith.

□ If move is from storage, interstate or overseas, inventory everything then sign.

□ Very first furniture to assemble is the bed. Make it up as soon as possible.

□ Give children and pets their toys, they will settle in more quickly with old items.

□ Notify Removal company if anything is missing, right away.

□ Keep pets inside for a few days. This will lessen their stress.

□ Double check keys. Try all keys to all locks, doors, windows are working.

□ Check you have the bins. Ask your new local council for garbage collection information and new residents’ folders.
